The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has a long history of talented creators, and one of them produced an old-style oil painting of the game's iconic hero, the Dragonborn.

The Dragonborn was heavily featured in Bethesda's brief but effective marketing campaign for Skyrim before it was released eleven years ago. Bethesda wanted to ensure the player character played a pivotal role in the story and the game's promotional content, so this wasn't the Nerevarine or the Hero of Kvatch.

Players knew who they would be entering Skyrim, unlike Oblivion and Morrowind: the destined hero of Nordic myth who could use the power of the dragons against them. Bethesda's decision to diverge from the more subdued strategy of earlier games paid off.

The prologue reflected the change by immediately introducing players to the main threat of Alduin and his dragons. Skyrim was bold and self-assured in its storytelling if occasionally lacking in depth, like the Nords themselves.

Entar0178 decided to use traditional oil paint on a canvas to depict Skyrim's main character because of these choices, giving the Dragonborn an instantly recognizable appearance that players cling to.

The helm, the fur armor, and the steel sword are all pictured here, along with other traditional components associated with the Dragonborn's public image. The composition of the painting—which features the Dragonborn and his shield forming a heart in the center—is the object's most interesting feature.
