Phil Schiller Exits App Store Role Over Concerns Regarding New CEO’s Monetization Goals

Published on:

Phil Schiller, Apple’s longtime marketing chief and the face of its product launches, is stepping down from his day-to-day oversight of the App Store. The transition marks the first major leadership shift under John Ternus, who officially assumed the role of Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook.

While the move is being characterized as a natural step toward retirement for the 66-year-old executive, internal reporting suggests a deeper strategic divide. Schiller’s decision was reportedly influenced by reservations regarding the new administration’s plans to prioritize aggressive App Store monetization and recurring revenue growth.

The App Store, which generates an estimated $30 billion in annual revenue, is now moving back into Apple’s Services division under the leadership of Eddy Cue. This structural shift reverses a decade-long arrangement; Schiller had maintained direct control over the platform since 2015. Under the new hierarchy, Carson Oliver and Ann Thai will manage the App Store’s operations, reporting directly to Cue.

A Shift Toward Aggressive Monetization

The reported friction stems from a pivot in how Apple intends to extract value from its software ecosystem. Sources familiar with the transition indicate that Ternus is seeking to expand margins through more assertive revenue strategies. Schiller, an architect of Apple’s traditional brand-first approach, reportedly feared that these initiatives would further antagonize the developer community and draw additional fire from government regulators.

These concerns come at a sensitive time for the company’s regulatory standing. The push for higher margins under Ternus suggests Apple may be looking for ways to offset the costs of regulatory concessions in other regions or through new service tiers.

New Leads for Events and Services

The reorganization extends beyond the App Store. Phil Schiller is also stepping down from overseeing Apple’s product launch events.

Schiller will remain at the company as an Apple Fellow, a title he has held since 2020. In this capacity, he is expected to work on unspecified initiatives, though he will no longer hold the final word on the App Store’s policies or the theatrical execution of the company’s “Keynote” presentations.

The move consolidates significant power under Eddy Cue, who now oversees the entirety of Apple’s Services empire—including iCloud, Apple Music, and the App Store—at a time when the company is increasingly reliant on software and subscription fees to maintain its growth trajectory.
