  • Revised Release Timeline: Publisher 505 Games and developer ArtPlay have moved the launch of the project to 2027 to allow for final polishing.

Development Timeline for Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement

Publisher 505 Games and developer ArtPlay have officially announced that The Scarlet Engagement is now delayed to 2027. The game was originally scheduled for a late 2026 release window. Koji Igarashi, the producer of the title, explained that while development has entered its final stages, the project requires additional time for polish. This shift in schedule allows the team to refine the experience, much like the work seen in the Witcher 3 Remastered launch.

Honoring a Creative Legacy

The delay of the project is partly rooted in a desire to protect the legacy of the game’s creative director, Shutaro Ida. Ida, who was known to the community as Curry the Kid, passed away in February 2026 after a battle with cancer. Koji Igarashi stated that the extra development time is intended to ensure the final game accurately reflects the vision left behind by Ida. Maintaining the integrity of a high-profile project during development hurdles is common in the industry, as seen when teams address GTA VI security and development updates.

Setting and Narrative Prequel Elements

The upcoming title serves as a prequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The story takes place in 16th-century England, approximately 200 years prior to the events that occurred in the first game. This historical setting introduces two new dual protagonists, Leonardo (Leo) and Alex. These characters are controlled simultaneously through a new gameplay mechanic known as the buddy system. Together, they must face the primary antagonist, the Demon Lord Elias. Elias controls a mysterious floating castle that has begun terrorizing the kingdom.

Mechanics and World Design

ArtPlay claims that this installment features the largest map in the series history. To enhance exploration, the world includes a dynamic day-and-night cycle that impacts gameplay. Beyond the scale of the environment, players will engage with a deep crafting and cooking system. There is also a focus on character customization that allows players to alter their specific attributes. The title is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. As players look toward the next generation of hardware, including the potential Nintendo Switch 2, the technical scope of this prequel remains a priority for the developers.
