Blizzard Entertainment shadow-dropped a major expansion for its classic real-time strategy title during the BlizzCon opening ceremony on September 12, 2026. Titled Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, the release introduces a substantial new campaign and a significant technical overhaul aimed at addressing long-standing criticisms of the 2020 remaster.
The expansion’s narrative is anchored by a four-mission prologue titled “The Last Days of Lordaeron.” This opening segment follows Guard Lieutenant Garek Bandarion through the collapse of the human kingdom, providing a boots-on-the-ground perspective of the events surrounding the fall of the Silver Hand. This prologue leads into the main Forsaken Kingdom campaign, which focuses on the rise of the undead faction and their struggle for sovereignty.
Accompanying the expansion is Patch 3.0, a major update that introduces a “Definitive Edition” graphics mode. This new visual tier overhauls the game’s lighting system and general performance, representing a direct attempt to refine the aesthetic style that proved controversial during the initial Reforged launch. While the expansion itself is a paid addition, the technical improvements in Patch 3.0 are being made available to existing owners of the base game.
Beyond the visual changes, Patch 3.0 implements several functional updates to the RTS engine. Most notably, the maximum unit selection group size has been increased from 12 to 24, a change that significantly alters the pace and management of large-scale battles. The update also introduces the Forsaken Paladin as a new neutral Tavern Hero, available across SD, DE, and HD visual modes.
Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom is currently available for standalone purchase on Battle.net for $29.99. For players looking for the complete experience, Blizzard has also introduced a “Warcraft Forever Collection” bundle priced at $79.99, which includes the base game and the new expansion content.
The expansion’s release arrives alongside broader technical shifts for the client, including the removal of LAN mode in the Reforged version, though Patch 3.0 adds new UI themes and unit occlusion features to improve visual clarity during complex engagements.
