The Exit 8 Hits 3 Million Sales Milestone Following Global Expansion

The viral indie sensation The Exit 8 has officially reached two million copies sold as of August 2025. The figure marks a significant trajectory for the “anomaly-finding” title, which has grown from a solo PC project into a multi-platform franchise with a presence in global cinema.

Developed by Kotake Create and published by PLAYISM, the game first gained traction for its minimalist approach to psychological horror. Set in a looping Japanese subway corridor, players must identify subtle changes in their environment to find their way out. This “walking simulator” mechanic sparked an entire “8-like” subgenre within the indie market, leading to numerous inspired works and clones following its initial 2023 debut.

The path to two million sales was bolstered by a steady expansion across gaming hardware. After reaching one million sales in early 2024, the title was ported to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and eventually Xbox Series X/S and mobile platforms in early 2025. By August 2025, the game had reached two million sales.

Beyond its digital success, the franchise’s growth has been tied closely to its crossover into traditional media. A live-action movie adaptation premiered in Japan on August 29, 2025, and later debuted in U.S. theaters on April 10, 2026, through the distributor Neon. The film’s theatrical window is credited with driving a new wave of interest in the original game among Western audiences.

While the original game remains the primary driver of these sales figures, the “8” series has been solidified as a staple of the modern horror genre. The Exit 8 is currently available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, iOS, and Android.
