Roblox is dismantling the boundaries of its traditional “walled garden” ecosystem, announcing a suite of tools that will allow creators to build games using generative AI and distribute them as standalone apps or directly through web browsers. The shift, detailed during the 2024 Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), signals the company’s transition from a singular gaming platform into a broad-market game engine and cloud distribution service.
One of the most significant technical shifts is the introduction of a dedicated web player for Google Chrome. Scheduled to launch by the end of 2026, the player will allow users to join Roblox experiences instantly within the browser, removing the requirement to download and install a separate client. This move is paired with a new “standalone app” model, which gives developers the option to publish their creations as independent titles on mobile, PC, and console app stores while continuing to utilize Roblox’s backend technology.

To populate this expanding distribution network, Roblox is leaning heavily into generative AI to lower the barrier for entry. The company is expanding its “Build” mobile-first creation tool to a public alpha in Singapore and Serbia following a pilot in New Zealand.
Technological advancements in AI are also moving beyond static assets. Roblox introduced “4D generation” via its Cube Foundation Model, an AI system capable of creating functional, interactive objects from simple text prompts. Unlike previous models that generated 3D meshes, the 4D model produces items with built-in physics and interactivity, such as a drivable car that understands how to move and respond to user input upon generation.
The platform is also diversifying the types of games it supports. According to the Roblox Newsroom, the engine is adding native support for 2D games, including orthographic camera modes and sprite-sheet imports. This allows Roblox to compete more directly with mobile-first 2D platforms and puzzle game engines. Furthermore, the company confirmed that offline play support is scheduled to arrive by mid-2027, addressing a long-standing limitation of the cloud-based platform.
The economic structure of the platform is evolving alongside these technical changes. To facilitate easier monetization, the “Roblox Wallet” is set to launch in December 2026 for U.S.-based creators. This system will allow for daily, automatic payouts in real currency, moving away from the manual “DevEx” (Developer Exchange) processes of the past.
As of late 2026, Roblox reports 132 million daily active users. By expanding into 2D development, standalone app distribution, and frictionless browser access, the company aims to scale its ecosystem beyond its core demographic and into the broader professional gaming and app markets.
