Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 at its “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, 2026, positioning the wearable as a sophisticated assistant for capturing real-world interactions. The update introduces “Audio Intelligence,” a subset of Apple Intelligence that allows the device to listen to ambient conversations and generate automated summaries through a new feature called Siri Recap.
Siri Recap is designed to provide users with highlights and key points from their chats directly within the Siri app. Unlike several third-party AI note-taking applications that have recently entered the market, Apple’s implementation notably omits full, verbatim transcripts and does not store actual audio recordings. This design choice is intended to preserve privacy while still offering the utility of a digital memory.

For immediate needs, a companion feature called Live Rewind allows users to see what was just said in real-time. By double-pressing the Digital Crown, the watch displays a transcript of the last 15 seconds of audio. This functionality is aimed at users who may have missed a specific detail in a conversation or meeting and need a quick reference without navigating through a full summary.
These features are powered by the new S11 chip, which includes quad-core Neural Engine components specifically optimized for high-frequency secure audio processing. Because of the hardware requirements for local, on-device AI processing, Siri Recap and Live Rewind are exclusive to the latest hardware generation.
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 remains priced at $799, while the Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399.
To address potential privacy concerns regarding ambient listening, Apple has made Siri Recap an opt-in feature. Users can also automate when the microphone is active by scheduling the feature based on specific times of day or GPS locations—for example, setting the watch to only listen and recap while the wearer is at their office coordinates.
Preorders for both the Series 12 and Ultra 4 opened on September 9, with full retail availability and shipping scheduled to begin on September 18.
