Blizzard Entertainment has officially confirmed the development of a new StarCraft game, pivoting the franchise from its real-time strategy roots into an open-world shooter format. Announced during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12, the project represents the first major expansion of the StarCraft universe in over a decade.
The reveal featured a cinematic trailer titled “Dominion,” which focused on the gritty, ground-level perspective of human infantry recruits. Unlike the bird’s-eye view of traditional StarCraft titles, this project is being developed as an expansive action experience under the leadership of Dan Hay. Hay, a former Ubisoft executive known for his work on the Far Cry franchise, joined Blizzard in 2022. He transitioned to the StarCraft project after serving as the general manager for Blizzard’s previously canceled survival game, codenamed Odyssey.

A Long-Term Development Cycle
While the announcement ends years of speculation regarding the franchise’s future, the project is still years away from completion. Blizzard confirmed that the StarCraft open-world shooter is currently targeting a 2030 release window. This extended timeline suggests the game is in relatively early production and may be designed with next-generation hardware in mind.
The 2030 target also places the StarCraft project behind other major Blizzard milestones. During the same keynote, the studio reported that Diablo V is currently scheduled for a Spring 2029 release.
Overcoming a History of Cancellations
This announcement marks Blizzard’s third attempt to bring the StarCraft universe into the shooter genre. The company previously canceled StarCraft: Ghost in 2006 after years of public development and later scrapped a tactical shooter codenamed Project Ares in 2019. The existence of a third attempt at a series shooter was first reported in 2024 by journalist Jason Schreier in the book “Play Nice,” which detailed Blizzard’s internal efforts to revive the IP.
By leveraging Dan Hay’s experience with open-world mechanics, Blizzard is moving away from the tactical, mission-based structure of the canceled Ghost project in favor of a more modern, systemic world. However, the initial reveal focused primarily on the Terran perspective; Blizzard has not yet confirmed if the Zerg or Protoss will be playable or if the game will remain focused on human infantry.
