Ladder Lad Gameplay: Navigating a 2D Platformer Without a Jump Button

Published on:

In the traditional 2D platformer, the jump button is the foundation of movement. However, the upcoming title Ladder Lad is built on a different premise: a world where humanity has forgotten how to jump, leaving the ladder as the sole instrument for vertical and horizontal mobility. Developed by BUCK Games in collaboration with sound studio Antfood, the title is a 2D physics-based precision platformer where every obstacle must be overcome without leaving the ground in a conventional sense.

The gameplay centers on a system that transforms the standard ladder from a simple climbing tool into a versatile multi-tool. Players utilize the ladder to bridge wide gaps, pole-vault over hazards, and even use it as a makeshift pogo stick to navigate the environment. Because the game relies heavily on physics and precise manipulation of this object, the developers have confirmed that Ladder Lad requires a controller to play; keyboard and mouse inputs are not supported.

The Transition from Design to Original IP

BUCK Games is not a stranger to unconventional mechanics. The studio previously developed the 2023 title Let’s! Revolution!, a roguelite inspired by the logic of Minesweeper. With Ladder Lad, the team is leaning into their background as a design agency to create a distinct visual and mechanical identity. The collaboration with Antfood, known for their high-profile audio work, ensures that the chaotic, physics-heavy movement is paired with a specific sonic character.

Release Window and Platforms

While some third-party listings have previously suggested an earlier arrival, the official release window for Ladder Lad is set for 2027. The game is currently slated for launch on PC via Steam and the Nintendo Switch. The extended development timeline appears to account for the complexity of the physics-based puzzles, which require players to master momentum and balance rather than relying on the “safety net” of a jump mechanic.

The gameplay highlights how these mechanics evolve from basic climbing into high-speed navigation. By stripping away the most basic verb in gaming—the jump—BUCK Games is positioning Ladder Lad as a “precision platformer” that demands a complete reevaluation of how players interact with digital spaces.
