Marvel’s Wolverine Secures Strongest PS5 Exclusive Launch Since Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Wolverine has achieved the strongest launch for a PlayStation 5 exclusive in three years, despite a wave of social media criticism regarding its gameplay mechanics and linear structure. According to data from Alinea Analytics, the title sold an estimated 1.9 million copies within its first three days on the market following its September 15, 2026, release.

The launch window, spanning September 15–17, generated approximately $130 million in revenue. While these figures represent a significant commercial success, the game currently holds a Metacritic score of 77—the lowest rating for any of Insomniac Games’ Marvel titles to date.

The commercial performance of Wolverine outpaces several high-profile Sony exclusives released since 2023. Its $130 million three-day revenue exceeded that of Ghost of Yōtei, which earned $121.9 million in the same timeframe. The gap is even wider when compared to other recent internal projects; Wolverine’s launch revenue is roughly double that of Marathon ($60 million) and triple that of Saros ($40 million). However, the title remains behind the record-breaking pace set by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which moved 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours.

A significant portion of Wolverine’s success was secured before the public discourse began. Alinea Analytics reports that 1 million of the total sales were digital pre-orders. Interestingly, physical media continues to hold a notable share of the market for this release, with physical disc sales accounting for 22.9% of launch revenue—roughly 435,000 units. This occurs as industry speculation continues regarding Sony’s long-term commitment to physical hardware.

The game has faced a polarized reception on social media platforms, where critics have targeted specific gameplay elements. Much of the negativity has centered on the “scent trail” mechanic—mockingly dubbed “fart gas” by some online detractors—and perceived limitations in its linear level design.

Physical sales accounted for nearly 23% of Wolverine's launch revenue, alongside one million digital pre-orders.

Insomniac Games’ communications director, James Stevenson, addressed the online environment surrounding the launch, stating that social media algorithms “wildly amplify and push negativity.” This sentiment suggests a disconnect between vocal online communities and the broader consumer base, which has turned out in record numbers for the character’s first solo outing in over a decade.

Geographically, the United States remains the primary driver for the title’s success, accounting for 53% of the total player base. While the “online mauling” has dominated headlines, the financial data suggests that the Marvel brand and Insomniac’s pedigree have been sufficient to overcome critical friction and sustain Sony’s momentum in the premium exclusive market.
