How the Nintendo Switch Preserved Japan’s Dedicated Console Market

Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, stated on September 17, 2026, that the Japanese console gaming sector might have vanished entirely had the Nintendo Switch failed to find an audience. Speaking on “The Game Business” podcast, Toto argued that the domestic market for dedicated gaming hardware would have been “completely eliminated” in favor of mobile platforms if the Switch had mirrored the commercial struggle of its predecessor, the Wii U.

According to market analysis from Kantan Games, Nintendo currently holds approximately 70% of the total gaming content market share in Japan. This dominance persists even as the industry shifts toward a new generation of hardware. The original Nintendo Switch, which launched in 2017, reached approximately 38.5 million units sold in Japan as of June 30, 2026. Its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, launched on June 5, 2025, and has already moved 6.7 million units in the region as of September 2026.

The scale of Nintendo’s domestic footprint is further highlighted by the performance of its competitors. The PlayStation 5, which has been on the market for nearly six years, has sold approximately 7.6 million units in Japan. While the PlayStation 5 maintains a dedicated audience, it has struggled to match the volume of Nintendo’s hybrid ecosystem, particularly as the broader Japanese market remains heavily weighted toward mobile and portable play.

Shifting Economics and the Mobile Dominance

Japan’s total gaming market is currently valued at $17 billion, but the console segment represents only a fraction of that total. Mobile gaming continues to lead the industry, accounting for $12 billion of the market, while dedicated consoles account for $3.5 billion. Despite this disparity, Nintendo has managed to maintain a high-value presence through software hits. In 2026, titles such as Pokémon Pokopia and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream have been cited as primary drivers of hardware adoption for the Switch 2.

Economic factors have recently altered the pricing landscape in Japan. On May 25, 2026, Nintendo increased the price of the Switch 2 to ¥59,980 (approximately $383), citing rising component costs. This move notably placed the Switch 2 at a higher retail price than the local cost of the PlayStation 5, which remains at ¥55,000. Despite the price hike, sales for the Switch 2 have remained steady, reflecting the platform’s entrenched position in Japanese consumer habits.

Despite a price increase in 2026, the Switch 2 hardware continues to lead dedicated console sales.

While Nintendo remains the dominant force in the console space, the Japanese market is seeing growth in other areas. PC gaming has expanded significantly, rising from a 5% market share in 2019 to 12.5% in 2025. This growth suggests that while the “traditional” console market was largely preserved by Nintendo’s success, players are increasingly diversifying their hardware choices outside of the mobile sphere. However, as Toto’s analysis suggests, the survival of a dedicated, high-volume console ecosystem in Japan appears fundamentally linked to the Switch platform’s ability to compete with the convenience of smartphones.
