Dark Souls 3 Mod DS3LE Integrates Path Tracing and NVIDIA DLSS 5

Modder Ganaboy is developing a comprehensive visual overhaul for FromSoftware’s 2016 title, Dark Souls 3, titled DS3LE (Dark Souls 3 Lighting Engine).

While the mod leverages new technology, it is being built with broader hardware compatibility in mind. Ganaboy is utilizing NVIDIA Real-Time Denoiser in Spherical Harmonics mode (NRD-SH). This approach is intended to provide visual quality similar to Ray Reconstruction while remaining performant on RTX 20 and 30 series hardware.

The Challenge of Geometry Density

The technical leap from the modder’s previous work on Dark Souls 2 to this project is significant due to the sheer complexity of the game worlds. Ganaboy reports that Dark Souls 3 contains approximately ten times the geometry density of its predecessor. This density increases the computational load on the Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH) structures used to calculate light bounces.

Due to this 10x increase in geometry, the developer suggests that performance expectations will need to be adjusted. Users who were able to run the Dark Souls 2 lighting mod on “Quality” upscaling settings may find they need to utilize “Balanced” or “Performance” modes in DS3LE to maintain a stable frame rate.

Development of the mod has reached a critical stage, with the developer reporting that over 80% of the game’s BVH structure is now complete. The final project is expected to have a relatively small storage footprint of approximately 3 to 4GB. A full public release for the DS3LE mod is currently targeted for late 2026.
