Isles of Sea & Sky Brings Sokoban-Metroidvania Gameplay to Nintendo Switch

The oceanic puzzle adventure Isles of Sea & Sky is scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch. The title brings its non-linear exploration and complex block-pushing mechanics to the handheld console, marking a significant transition for a project that began its journey years ago as a crowdfunding success.

The game is characterized by a “Sokoban-Metroidvania” hybrid design, where players navigate an open-world archipelago by solving environmental puzzles. Unlike traditional linear puzzle games, Isles of Sea & Sky allows players to explore at their own pace, discovering secrets and collecting items that expand their ability to interact with the world. The narrative is conveyed entirely through a textless storytelling method, using images and environmental cues rather than dialogue or written lore.

The game's 'Sokoban-Metroidvania' design requires players to solve environmental puzzles to unlock new areas of the archipelago.

The upcoming Switch port is expected to be the most feature-complete version of the game. It incorporates a major content update from late 2025 that introduced “meta puzzles” to the game’s primary regions, such as the Tidal Reef and Frozen Spire. These high-level challenges were designed to provide deeper layers of engagement for veteran players who had already mastered the core mechanics. For the console release, progress on the Switch port included optimizations for the game’s “undo” functionality to ensure smooth performance in high-density puzzle areas and fixes for performance issues in specific cutscenes.

The project’s history dates back to a successful Kickstarter campaign where it was originally titled Akurra. Following several years of development and a rebrand, the game was released for Windows PC on May 22, 2024. During its initial PC run, the game earned critical recognition within the indie development community, notably serving as an Independent Games Festival (IGF) “Excellence in Design” finalist in 2024.

The Switch version maintains a focus on accessibility. While the digital release is confirmed for the eShop, the project maintains the vision established during its multi-year development cycle.
