Reddit has announced a major tightening of its data ecosystem, setting a November 13, 2026, deadline to permanently end support for RSS feeds. The move is part of a phased shutdown of the platform’s legacy public Data API, which is scheduled to be fully retired by March 2027.
The company attributed the decision to the scale of scraping and automated abuse, specifically citing AI bots as the primary driver. By removing these open-access pathways, Reddit aims to protect its data from being harvested without compensation, effectively walling off its content to prioritize its own commercial licensing interests.
The API Shutdown Timeline
The retirement of the public API will occur in distinct stages over the next several months. Reddit will stop accepting any new API requests starting October 31, 2026. This will be followed by the termination of access for unregistered applications in early 2027, leading to a final closure of the remaining public endpoints in March 2027.
This follows a prior restriction on May 30, 2026, when Reddit disabled unauthenticated .json endpoints, which had previously allowed users and bots to view subreddits in JSON format by simply appending the file extension to a URL. The removal of RSS support on November 13 marks the end of the last remaining way to follow subreddit updates without using the official API or the website itself.
Migration Support and Developer Impact
To mitigate the impact on the developer community, Reddit has established a $1 million migration program. This initiative offers $1,000 grants to eligible developers who transition their existing applications to the proprietary Reddit Developer Platform. The company’s strategy is to move all automation and third-party tools into this controlled environment, which allows for better monitoring and enforcement of data usage policies.
Community moderators who rely on RSS for real-time alerts and activity monitoring are being encouraged to migrate to the “Discord Relay” app. This tool, built on Reddit’s internal Devvit platform, is designed to replicate the functionality of RSS by pushing notifications to external moderation channels without the need for a public feed.
Restrictions on Old Reddit
The data lockdown also extends to the “Old Reddit” interface (old.reddit.com). Access to the classic version of the site is now being restricted to moderators and users who have actively used the legacy interface within the last six months. This move is intended to prevent new scrapers or automated accounts from leveraging the lighter, more easily parsed classic site architecture for large-scale data extraction.
While the company frames these changes as essential for platform security and protecting user data from AI scrapers, the end of RSS and public API access represents the final sunset of Reddit’s open-web features. For individual users, the change means that following subreddits via third-party feed readers or custom scripts will no longer be possible after the mid-November cutoff.
