Blizzard Entertainment is expanding the scope of its flagship action-RPG franchise, confirming that Diablo V will launch with a larger roster of character classes than any previous entry in the series. Currently projected for a Spring 2029 release window, the sequel introduces a significant shift in both narrative and world design, moving away from the static hub-and-spoke model of its predecessors in favor of a procedural survival experience.
The story is set in a timeline where the Prime Evil has already achieved total victory. Diablo now rules Sanctuary from the ruins of Westmarch, leaving players to navigate a world where humanity has been largely displaced. This “post-victory” setting influences the game’s core loop, as traditional static towns are replaced by a mobile “Caravan” system. This caravan serves as a player-built community for merchants and companions that travels with the hero across a landscape that is no longer fixed.

A Growing Roster and the Plague Knight
While the full launch lineup has not yet been detailed, Blizzard has confirmed that it will exceed the starting counts of previous titles. Among the first confirmed classes are the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, alongside an entirely new addition: the Plague Knight.
The Plague Knight represents a mechanical departure for the series, designed to consume disease and corruption from the environment to fuel its abilities. This class is built to interact directly with the game’s new “Dread Commanders” mechanic—specific, high-threat NPCs corrupted by Hell that trigger procedural environmental changes in the overworld. As these commanders exert influence, they can alter terrain and points of interest between sessions, forcing players to adapt to a shifting map.
Return to Classic Complexity
In a move addressing long-standing community feedback, Diablo V is reviving several complex systems originally found in Diablo II. The size-based grid inventory system is returning, requiring players to once again manage the physical space items occupy in their packs. This mechanical shift coincides with the return of Runewords, providing a deeper layer of equipment customization that allows players to etch specific runes into gear to unlock powerful latent properties.
Survival in this more hostile Sanctuary is further aided by unique companions. Beyond the standard caravan of merchants, players can recruit “Zarg,” a sentient treasure goblin who acts as a permanent member of the player’s mobile base.

Development Status and Expanded Universe
According to Senior Game Director Joe Shely, development on Diablo V is currently approximately 30% complete. The project’s six-year development cycle—following the 2023 launch of the previous installment—is intended to accommodate a fully procedural overworld.
As development continues, Blizzard is also expanding the brand’s reach into other media. A Diablo animated series is currently in development at Netflix, which was confirmed alongside the game’s detailed gameplay reveal.
