Dune Awakening Update 1.5 Adds Single-Player Mode and Removes Base Upkeep

Funcom has released Update 1.5.3.0 for Dune: Awakening, introducing a dedicated single-player mode and sweeping changes to the game’s survival mechanics. The update, which launched on September 17, 2026, marks a significant pivot for the Arrakis-based survival title, offering a path for players to experience the game as a traditional RPG rather than a persistent MMO.

In the new solo mode, Funcom has replaced player-driven social and economic structures with automated systems. The Landsraad system, which usually facilitates competition between rival player guilds, is now populated by simulated factions. Similarly, the Exchange has been converted from a player-to-player marketplace into a static vendor with a curated inventory of items, ensuring solo players can progress without relying on a live economy.

The update also introduces several “safety net” features designed to reduce the friction of the survival genre. Players can also now choose from four difficulty settings, including a fully customizable mode to adjust the lethality and resource scarcity of Arrakis to their preference.

For example, Bungie is currently developing a permanent PvE mode for its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, which is slated for release on December 8, 2026. These changes suggest a move by developers to retain players who may be discouraged by the “always-on” requirements or competitive toxicity often found in the genre.

The Dune: Awakening update coincides with the game’s Early Access launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, which took place on September 22. On PC, the game is currently available at a 50% discount on Steam, bringing the price to $24.99 through October 1, 2026.
