Despite the silence from Insomniac Games and conflicting reports from franchise actors, a standalone Marvel’s Venom video game is reportedly still in active development. Industry insider NateTheHate reported on September 4, 2026, that the project remains on the studio’s roadmap, contradicting previous suggestions that the title had been scrapped.
The status of the project has been the subject of intense speculation following the death of actor Tony Todd on November 6, 2024. Todd, who provided the voice and performance capture for Venom in 2023’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, was a central pillar of the character’s modern incarnation. His passing led to internal and external questions regarding how the studio would proceed with a dedicated spin-off.

Conflicting Reports on Cancellation
The rumor mill regarding the game’s fate was further complicated by statements from within the Spider-Man cast. Nadji Jeter, the actor who portrays Miles Morales, previously claimed that the Venom project had been canceled following the loss of Tony Todd. However, this assertion was met with pushback from high-profile industry sources.
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier previously disputed reports of the game’s cancellation, and NateTheHate’s recent update aligns with the view that the project is proceeding. While the loss of Todd may require a significant pivot in casting or narrative direction—such as shifting the focus to a different host like Eddie Brock or re-casting the role entirely—insiders maintain that the commercial success of the Spider-Man universe makes a Venom-centric expansion a high priority for Sony and Insomniac.
Project Scope and Leaked Origins
The existence of the project first came to light during the massive 2023 Rhysida ransomware leak, which exposed Insomniac’s internal release schedule and budget documents. According to those leaked files, the game was being developed under the working title Venom: Lethal Protector.
The documents suggested a scope similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, featuring a campaign length of approximately 8 to 10 hours. The internal budget was reportedly set at $120 million, positioning it as a substantial mid-sized title designed to bridge the gap between major mainline entries.
The current lack of an official announcement likely stems from the studio’s immediate production focus. Insomniac’s next major release, Marvel’s Wolverine, is scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026. It is standard industry practice to maintain marketing silence on secondary projects until the primary triple-A title has reached its launch window. If the Venom rumors prove accurate, an official reveal may not occur until after the Wolverine launch cycle concludes.
