Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Includes On-Cartridge Mega Dimension DLC

Published on:

Nintendo is preparing a comprehensive physical release for its upcoming urban-focused adventure, Pokémon Legends: Z-A. A new retail bundle titled Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension is scheduled for release on October 29, 2026. This edition is designed to serve as a definitive version of the game, packaging the base experience with its major expansion on a single piece of hardware.

The primary draw for this edition is the inclusion of the “Mega Dimension” DLC directly on the game card. Unlike many modern “Complete” or “Game of the Year” editions that provide the base game on a disc or cartridge alongside a digital download code for additional content, this on-cartridge approach ensures the entire experience is playable without an additional internet connection or storage-heavy downloads.

Expanded Content and New Mega Evolutions

The “Mega Dimension” expansion significantly broadens the scope of the Lumiose City setting. The narrative content reportedly centers on the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa, whose signature portals facilitate new gameplay mechanics and story beats within the metropolitan environment.

In addition to the story expansion, the DLC introduces several new Mega Evolutions to the series. Players can expect to encounter and utilize Mega Evolutions for the Mythical Pokémon Darkrai and Magearna, as well as the Generation 9 pseudo-legendary Baxcalibur. This expansion of the Mega Evolution roster marks a significant return to the mechanic first introduced in the original Pokémon X and Y.

Hardware Compatibility and Performance

While the bundle is branded for the “Nintendo Switch 2,” the cartridge remains playable on the original Nintendo Switch hardware. However, technical reporting indicates that the performance enhancements and certain unique content features are locked to the newer hardware. On the successor console, the game is expected to take advantage of increased processing power to stabilize frame rates and improve the visual fidelity of the Lumiose City redevelopment project.

According to details announced regarding the physical launch, early purchasers of this edition will also receive a serial code for a bonus of 100 Ultra Balls.

The timing of this release places it roughly a year before the anticipated arrival of the franchise’s tenth generation. While early speculation suggested Gen 10 might arrive sooner, current reports suggest that the next major mainline entries—currently referred to by the titles Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves—are not expected until 2027. This 2026 “Switch 2 Edition” of Legends: Z-A appears positioned to bridge the gap between the two generations while offering a high-performance entry point for those adopting Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
