Gamescom 2026: The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Combines Cinematic Action With Hard Sci-Fi Tactics

Published on:

Owlcat Games is shifting its development focus from traditional isometric role-playing games to a cinematic third-person action RPG with the upcoming release of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Developed in partnership with Alcon Interactive Group, the title is currently scheduled for a Q2 2027 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The studio has also confirmed that the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass as a day-one release.

The project represents a significant genre shift for the studio behind Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. Under the guidance of Creative Director Alexander Mishulin, Osiris Reborn attempts to blend the “hard sci-fi” realism of the book and television series with a more direct, action-oriented combat style.

Squad Tactics and the Exploit System

While the game moves toward a real-time action format, Owlcat has integrated a squad-based “exploit” system to maintain tactical depth. In combat, players coordinate with their companions to manipulate the environment against enemies. Reports indicate that the system allows teammates to highlight specific environmental hazards in red, signaling opportunities for tactical strikes.

These exploits range from basic structural damage, such as dropping ceiling sections on adversaries, to more explosive interventions like detonating enemy fuel tanks. This mechanic is designed to reward players for spatial awareness and squad coordination rather than relying solely on traditional gunplay.

Narrative Ties and Setting

The story of Osiris Reborn places players in the role of a mercenary working for Pinkwater Security. The narrative begins during a critical lockdown on Eros Station, a central location in The Expanse lore. By starting the journey on Eros, the game grounds its story in one of the most volatile periods of the series’ timeline, focusing on the tension between the inner planets and the Belt.

To maintain continuity with the Prime Video adaptation, some original actors from the series are reported to be reprising their roles for the game. This involvement aims to provide a seamless transition for fans of the show, though specific character appearances beyond the player’s mercenary squad remain under wraps.

The game will be distributed across multiple PC storefronts, including Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, alongside its console debut in early 2027. Development remains focused on balancing Owlcat’s signature “choice and consequence” narrative style with the new third-person mechanical framework.
