Nocturnal II Shifts to Metroidvania Format for November 10 Release

Nocturnal II is developed and published by the Swiss-based studio Sunnyside Games.

The title returns players to the role of Ardeshir.

Conceptual layout of an ancient city showing non-linear paths.
The sequel transitions to a full-blown Metroidvania structure, emphasizing exploration within the city of Ytash.

The Enduring Flame Mechanic

The core of the gameplay remains centered on the “Enduring Flame” system. To survive the hazards of the dark, Ardeshir must strike fire sources to ignite his sword. This flame is not merely for offense; it is essential for clearing the lethal mist that blankets the world and for interacting with environmental puzzles. Players are tasked with physically maintaining their light source, as many areas remain inaccessible or deadly without an active flame.

While the original game utilized fire as a primary survival tool, the flame in Nocturnal II acts as both a weapon and a key, requiring players to manage their fire supply.

Development and Polish

Sunnyside Games has prioritized the final version’s quality, which led to the removal of an earlier public demo in May 2026. The studio confirmed at the time that the older build no longer accurately represented the improvements made to the final product.
