Audible has launched a trio of new features aimed at evolving audiobooks from a passive listening format into an interactive experience. The tools—Interactive Stories, Character Guide, and Visual Explorer—are currently available in beta for users in the United States and United Kingdom, marking a shift toward generative AI-driven roleplay and real-time content discovery.
The most prominent of these updates, “Interactive Stories,” allows listeners to engage in real-time spoken conversations with characters from specific titles. Rather than modifying the core audio of a book, these are separate bonus experiences powered by generative AI and conversational design. The feature debuted on October 1, 2026, alongside a new Audible Original adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which stars Jonathan Bailey, Ella Purnell, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

In the Dracula experience, listeners can converse with the character Renfield. To prevent the AI from “hallucinating” or breaking the immersion of the story, Audible requires creators to define the character personas and opening scenes. This technical framework is intended to ensure that AI responses remain faithful to the original narrative vision while allowing for open-ended dialogue.
According to Audible’s official announcement, these features were designed to meet an increasing demand for interactive media, particularly among younger audiences.
Complementing the conversational AI is the “Character Guide,” a feature that identifies the current speaker on the player page in real-time. This guide provides spoiler-free character cards that include narrator biographies, helping listeners keep track of large casts without accidentally revealing future plot points.

For stories with complex settings, the “Visual Explorer” surfaces maps, landmarks, and other relevant imagery during specific moments of playback. This visual layer is intended to provide geographic or environmental context for high-fantasy or science-fiction worlds where physical orientation is key to following the plot.
The rollout of these features will continue with the upcoming Audible Original Exoplanet, scheduled for release on November 5, 2026. That title, which features executive producer Andy Weir, is slated to include both the Character Guide and Interactive Stories features at launch. While the features are currently linked to high-profile Originals, the underlying technology suggests a broader application for the platform’s catalog as the beta progresses.
