Game of Thrones: War for Westeros RTS Prioritizes Lore and Rewriting Series Ending

PlaySide Studios is developing a real-time strategy game titled Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.

The game is currently scheduled for an early 2027 release on PC via Steam. The title features a campaign mode which allows players to “rewrite” the ending of the series by altering critical narrative outcomes.

Asymmetric Warfare and Lore-Driven Mechanics

War for Westeros will launch with four primary factions: House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the White Walkers. Each faction is designed with asymmetric mechanics that reflect their specific lore rather than a standardized unit roster. For example, House Lannister features a unique “Debt” mechanic, allowing players to spend beyond their current gold reserves to secure immediate military power at the risk of long-term consequences. Lannister players also have access to Wildfire as a high-risk, high-reward tactical weapon.

Hero Units and Tactical Choices

The roster of hero units continues to expand, with Arya Stark and Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane revealed as hero units during Gamescom 2026. These heroes possess abilities that can shift the tide of a battle through dramatic interventions.

While House Lannister relies on financial manipulation and volatile chemical warfare, other factions bring their own thematic strengths to the battlefield. House Targaryen’s gameplay naturally revolves around the power of dragons, while the White Walkers provide a different mechanical challenge suited to their role as an existential threat to the continent. By focusing on these distinct identities, the developers aim to capture the specific fantasy of the source material.
