Ubisoft Narrative Director Confirms Beyond Good And Evil 2 Active Development

Published on:

A senior narrative designer at Ubisoft has provided a rare public update on the status of Beyond Good & Evil 2, confirming that the project remains in active development despite years of silence and internal restructuring at the publisher. Rik Godwin, an Associate Narrative Director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, recently disclosed his involvement with the long-awaited sequel.

According to reports from KitGuru, Godwin clarified that he received official permission from Ubisoft to publicly confirm his involvement. This transparency is notable given the project’s reputation as a “ghost project” and the significant internal turmoil Ubisoft has faced throughout 2026, which saw the cancellation of several other unannounced titles while Beyond Good & Evil 2 was apparently spared.

Development History and Leadership Shifts

Originally announced in 2008 and famously re-revealed at E3 2017 as a space-faring prequel, Beyond Good & Evil 2 now holds the world record for the longest development period for a AAA video game. It officially surpassed the previous record-holder, Duke Nukem Forever, in 2022. The game’s 18-year development cycle has been marked by multiple delays and changes in leadership.

In late 2024, Ubisoft appointed Fawzi Mesmar as the project’s new creative director. Mesmar took over the role following the passing of Emile Morel, who had been a key figure in the game’s revitalized 2017 vision.

The timing of Godwin’s confirmation coincides with other major milestones for the publisher, including the scheduled release of Rayman Legends Retold on December 3, 2026. While Ubisoft has not provided a new release window for Beyond Good & Evil 2, the explicit permission granted to Godwin to discuss his involvement indicates that the publisher may be preparing to step back into the spotlight with the project after years of development behind closed doors.
