Sony Updates PS5 Slim with PS5 Pro Cooling and Improved CMOS Access

Published on:

Sony has quietly updated the hardware of the PlayStation 5 Slim, introducing a new internal revision that adopts cooling and repairability features originally developed for the PlayStation 5 Pro. The refresh, centered around a new EDM-051 motherboard, surfaced around October 1, 2026, and was first identified within the Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition console bundles.

The most significant technical shift involves the console’s cooling architecture. Sony has implemented a liquid-metal interface and containment system modeled after the PlayStation 5 Pro. This design is intended to provide more robust protection against liquid metal leakage, a concern reported by some users in earlier Slim revisions. By incorporating this Pro-tier containment, the standard hardware revision aims for better thermal stability and long-term reliability.

A Critical Win for Repairability

Beyond thermal management, the EDM-051 motherboard addresses a long-standing “CBOMB” concern regarding the console’s CMOS battery. In previous PlayStation 5 models, replacing the internal CR2032 battery required a near-total disassembly of the machine. The new revision places the battery in an easily accessible location, allowing for replacement without removing the motherboard. This change ensures that the console remains functional even if the internal clock battery fails years down the line, a move that significantly extends the hardware’s viable lifespan for collectors and long-term owners.

Under the hood, the revision also includes an optimized HDMI retimer. While this change likely serves to reduce production costs, it represents a further refinement of the PS5 Slim’s internal component layout, streamlining the board for better efficiency.

Software Integration and AI Upscaling

This hardware refresh coincides with a major software-level expansion for the base PlayStation 5 ecosystem. On October 1, 2026, Sony introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). This AI-driven upscaling technology provides base PS5 models with visual parity and performance boosts similar to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) found on the Pro model.

The software update enabled the QSSR features. Together, the hardware and software updates suggest a strategic “Pro-fication” of the base console, ensuring that the standard PlayStation 5 hardware can maintain visual standards as the generation enters its later lifecycle phases.

While Sony has not officially marketed these changes as a new “version” of the Slim, the EDM-051 motherboard is expected to become the standard for new PS5 Slim units across various regional SKUs moving forward.
