Facepunch Studios has officially released the “Livestock Update” for Rust as of October 1, 2026, introducing a specialized dairy-skimming mechanic that fundamentally alters the game’s agricultural meta. While the update adds cows and sheep to the landscape, the strategic core of the patch lies in a new trade-off for tea-based buffs: choosing between the high-intensity “Creamy” variants or the long-lasting “Milky” alternatives.

The new system requires players to manage their harvest through a timed refrigeration process. Once milk is collected from cows, it must be refrigerated for four hours before it can be skimmed into cream and skimmed milk. This processed cream acts as a powerful additive for teas, significantly increasing their effectiveness at the cost of uptime.
The Strategic Dairy Meta: Potency vs. Endurance
The decision to use cream versus milk depends entirely on a player’s farming objectives. According to initial performance data, the “Creamy” variants of existing teas provide a much higher output but require more frequent re-dosing.
- Creamy Teas: These prioritize maximum yield. For example, a Pure Ore Tea enhanced with cream increases the yield bonus to 65% (up from the standard 50%) but reduces the total duration to approximately 24 minutes.
- Milky Teas: These are designed for long-form farming sessions. Utilizing milk extends the buff duration up to 45 minutes while maintaining the tea’s base effectiveness.
This division forces players to calculate whether they can maximize a high-yield window before their inventory fills or if the convenience of a 45-minute buff is more efficient for extended roam-farming.
Animal Husbandry and Genetic Breeding
The Livestock Update also brings a more complex breeding system to the base-building experience. Players can now find livestock in the wild or purchase calves and lambs from Ranches and Large Barns. Beyond providing milk and wool, these animals can be harvested for meat, bones, leather, and dung.
Similar to the existing plant farming mechanics, animal breeding utilizes a 6-gene genome. This allows dedicated farmers to pursue “God Clones”—animals with optimized genetics for faster growth or higher resource production. To support this increased focus on livestock, a new Biofuel Generator has been added, allowing players to convert raw or spoiled meat into low-grade fuel, providing a utility for meat waste that previously had little value for large-scale clans.

The environmental update is rounded out by the addition of several new passive critters, including squirrels, rabbits, frogs, and sea turtles. While these do not interact with the dairy or breeding systems, they contribute to the broader overhaul of the world’s ecosystem. Players looking to optimize their farming efficiency will likely focus on the new genetics system to ensure a steady supply of high-fat cream for their high-tier raids and farming runs.
