Netflix and SEGA have officially expanded their partnership with a new multi-title deal that includes live-action film adaptations of Crazy Taxi and the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, alongside a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series. The agreement, announced on September 14, 2026, aims to bridge SEGA’s gaming roadmaps with Netflix’s streaming audience through a variety of genres ranging from crime drama to preschool-focused animation.

Live-Action Crazy Taxi Comedy

The high-speed arcade classic Crazy Taxi is being developed as a live-action comedy film. The screenplay is being handled by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo recently noted for their work on the 2025 The Naked Gun reboot.

Production is bolstered by Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, who previously worked on the successful live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films. This cinematic expansion coincides with SEGA’s efforts to revitalize the franchise in the gaming space; a new title, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Stranger Than Heaven

In a move that highlights SEGA’s newest intellectual properties, Netflix is also developing a live-action crime drama based on Stranger Than Heaven. This project originates from Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio, the developers behind the Like a Dragon and Yakuza series.

The source material is a new game set in early 20th-century Japan following the character Makoto Daito. While the film adaptation is in early development, the Stranger Than Heaven game is locked for a global release on January 15, 2027. This adaptation represents a gritty tonal shift compared to SEGA’s other transmedia projects, leaning into the hard-boiled storytelling RGG Studio is known for.

Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series

The partnership also includes a new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series specifically targeting an “upper preschool” audience. This distinguishes the project from the previous Sonic Prime series, which was aimed at a slightly older 6-11 demographic.

Produced by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, the series is described as a high-voltage comedy with “edge,” intended to introduce the blue speedster to a younger generation. This project continues the long-standing collaboration between SEGA and Netflix, which has seen the hedgehog become a cornerstone of the platform’s animated gaming content.
