Nintendo has confirmed that Metroid Ravenous, the first major 2D entry in the series designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, will launch on January 28, 2027. Developing the title is MercurySteam, the studio behind Metroid Dread and Metroid: Samus Returns, in collaboration with Nintendo EPD. The game serves as a direct narrative sequel to 2021’s Metroid Dread, focusing on the biological aftermath of Samus Aran’s full Metroid transformation.
The announcement, which took place during a Nintendo Direct on September 9, 2026, confirmed several long-standing rumors regarding the game’s direction. While a Brazilian rating board leak in July 2026 first surfaced the Ravenous title, the official reveal detailed a significant shift in gameplay and tone. Moving toward survival-horror, the game introduces a “hunger” mechanic where Samus must actively absorb energy from enemies to sustain her life force and fuel her abilities, a literal manifestation of her predatory Metroid DNA.

The ‘Eat or Be Eaten’ Mechanic
Unlike previous entries where energy tanks were largely static upgrades, Metroid Ravenous centers on a constant metabolic struggle. Samus now features full voice acting as she narrates her survival on a mysterious moon, describing a losing battle to maintain her humanity against the Metroid instincts within her. This “feeding” system replaces traditional power-up progression in several ways; players must decide whether to consume energy for immediate health or store it to evolve specific biological weapons.
The narrative stakes lean into the “Samus is evil” speculation that has circulated since the closing moments of Metroid Dread. By forcing players to engage with the predatory nature of the character, the game explores whether Samus is still a protector or has become the very bio-weapon the Galactic Federation once feared. This darker tone is reflected in the environment, which utilizes the increased processing power of the Nintendo Switch 2 to render more organic, claustrophobic settings than its predecessor.
Launch Editions and Amiibo
Nintendo has confirmed that Metroid Ravenous is a dedicated next-generation exclusive, with no version planned for the original Nintendo Switch hardware. To mark the launch, a Special Edition will be available featuring a SteelBook case and an art book detailing the evolution of Samus’s new biological suit.
A new line of three amiibo will also launch alongside the game on January 28. This set includes a new Samus Aran figure in her “Ravenous” form, a Chozo Statue, and a third unannounced figure. While early retail listings suggested only two figures, official Direct materials confirmed a total of three. These collectibles are expected to provide in-game resources to help manage the new hunger mechanic, though specific functionality has not yet been detailed.
