Hideo Kojima has revealed he was “blindsided” by Sony Interactive Entertainment‘s decision to end support for his upcoming espionage title, Physint, during a mid-June 2026 Zoom call. Despite a professional relationship with the company spanning back to the 1994 launch of the original PlayStation, the director indicated the sudden termination of the project left him in a state of shock and created an immediate crisis for his independent studio.
Speaking in interviews with The Washington Post and IGN on September 20, Kojima described the moment he received the news, stating his “mind went blank” upon hearing the project would no longer be a Sony-supported endeavor. The director expressed a belief that his three-decade history with the brand should have warranted more substantial warning before the collaboration was dissolved so abruptly.
The Risk to Kojima Productions
The cancellation placed significant strain on Kojima Productions, which currently employs approximately 200 people at its Tokyo headquarters. Following the June meeting, the studio endured a three-month “frantic” period of pitching to other partners to avoid a total collapse. While Sony reportedly cited missed development deadlines and budget concerns as the primary reasons for dropping the IP, according to reports from Bloomberg, the studio was forced to find a new financial backer to ensure the survival of the project and its staff.
The uncertainty ended on September 9, 2026, when Xbox Wire confirmed that Kojima Productions had reached an agreement with Xbox Game Studios to publish Physint. The move marks a significant shift for the director, whose most high-profile works have historically been synonymous with PlayStation hardware.

During the Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, it was finalized that Bill Skarsgård will take the lead role in the game, joined by actress Charlee Fraser.
