Baldur’s Gate 3 Modder Adds Chionthar Wilds Region to Bridge Act 2 and 3

A significant expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 has entered public beta, aiming to bridge the geographic and narrative gap between the game’s second and third acts. The mod, titled “Baldur’s Gate 3: Act Two Expansion,” introduces a brand-new playable region known as the Chionthar Wilds, providing a physical path for players to travel toward the city after the conclusion of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

Developed by modder SquallyDaBeanz over an 18-month period, the project represents one of the most ambitious custom content additions since the game’s official release. The expansion specifically targets the transition following the events at Moonrise Towers. In the base game, players typically bypass the long trek to the city through a fast-travel cutscene; the Chionthar Wilds replaces this transition with a fully realized environment that the developer claims is similar in physical scope to the Act One Wilderness area.

Bridging the Path to Baldur’s Gate

The Chionthar Wilds are set along the banks of the River Chionthar, a critical geographic feature in Dungeons & Dragons lore that connects the city of Elturel to Baldur’s Gate. By making this region playable, the mod addresses a frequent point of discussion within the community regarding the relatively sudden jump into the city’s outskirts at the start of Act Three. The new area is designed to be accessible immediately after players resolve the primary conflicts of Act Two and prepare to leave the shadow-cursed region behind.

According to development notes, the project began in early 2025 following the release of official modding tools. The expansion utilizes the infrastructure provided by the Larian Modding Toolkit, which was introduced in Patch 7. This toolkit allowed for the creation of custom terrain and navmeshes—technical requirements for large-scale world-building that were not accessible during the first year of the game’s life. The use of these official tools is intended to ensure the new region functions within the game’s established mechanical framework, though the current beta version focuses more on environmental exploration than dense quest chains.

The mod reached its public beta phase on September 20, 2026, marking a major milestone for the long-term project. As a beta, the current release is primarily intended for testing navigation and world stability. Players looking to explore the Chionthar Wilds will likely need to use a save file positioned at the conclusion of Act Two or begin a new playthrough to experience the expanded journey to the city gates as intended.
