How Independent Limb Control and Sound Collection Work in Stranger Than Heaven

SEGA and RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven highlights the unconventional mechanics of the upcoming 50-year crime saga. The title serves as a distant prequel to the Like a Dragon franchise, tracing the life of protagonist Makoto Daito from 1915 through 1965.

The game is structured across five distinct Japanese eras and locations: Kokura in 1915, Kure in 1929, Minami in 1943, Atami in 1951, and Shinjuku in 1965. The developer is blending historical drama with a new approach to the studio’s signature action.

The game features a unique 'Showman' system for music creation alongside independent limb combat.

Independent Limb Combat

Stranger Than Heaven introduces a combat system that departs from the traditional combo-heavy mechanics of previous RGG Studio titles. Players are required to control the left and right sides of Makoto Daito’s body independently. This “independent limb control” allows for simultaneous offensive and defensive actions, such as blocking an incoming strike with one arm while delivering a counter-punch with the other.

The system is designed to utilize controller triggers to manage Daito’s movements, requiring players to coordinate the protagonist’s actions with more precision than in standard brawlers. This mechanical shift reflects the game’s broader attempt to differentiate itself from the modern-day entries in the Like a Dragon series.

The ‘Showman’ System and Sound Collection

A significant portion of the gameplay experience revolves around the “Showman” system, a musical management mechanic. Players navigate the environment to collect specific ambient sounds, which can then be synthesized into original music tracks. This system ties directly into the game’s central narrative and its star-studded production.

The cast features several notable figures from the music industry, including Ado and Snoop Dogg, the latter of whom portrays a character named Orpheus. The game also includes a digital reconstruction of Tupac Shakur. RGG Studio has specified that this CG version of Shakur was created through traditional modeling and animation techniques rather than using generative AI.

Prequel Connections and Availability

As a prequel set decades before the rise of Kazuma Kiryu or Ichiban Kasuga, Stranger Than Heaven explores the foundations of the Japanese underworld. While official materials currently identify the protagonist as Makoto Daito, the 50-year timeline has led to significant speculation regarding his potential role as the founder of the Tojo Clan, a central organization in the later chronologies.

Stranger Than Heaven will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with SEGA confirming that it will be a Day One addition to the Xbox Game Pass library.
