Following the global success of recent Chinese action titles, developer Genigods Lab has revealed Genigods: Nezha, a premium single-player action RPG currently slated for a 2028 release. While drawing inevitable comparisons to high-profile character-driven epics like God of War, the project distinguishes itself through a unique “three-stage” narrative evolution and a combat system heavily influenced by the martial arts philosophy of Bruce Lee.

The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

A Three-Stage Evolution Narrative

Unlike many action RPGs that feature a static protagonist, Genigods: Nezha centers on the “Spirit Pearl,” a creation of the goddess Nüwa. The narrative and gameplay are structured around three distinct phases of existence, each representing a shift in both character power and visual design.

Players begin as a “primitive vessel,” an early form of the pearl, before evolving into a mortal human. The final stage transforms the character into the celestial warrior Nezha. This progression follows the story of the “Spirit Pearl,” a creation of the goddess Nüwa, through these three stages of evolution.

‘Be Water’ Combat Mechanics

Genigods Lab has stated that the combat in Genigods: Nezha is explicitly modeled after Jeet Kune Do principles. The development team is utilizing Bruce Lee’s “Be Water” philosophy to create a dual-stance system that allows for fluid transitions between ground-based strikes and 3D aerial combat.

This “hardcore” approach positions the title as a traditional character action game rather than a strict soulslike, prioritizing high-intensity combos and rhythmic movement over slow, methodical attrition.

Developer Background and Production

The project is being handled by a core team of approximately 60 to 70 people at Genigods Lab. While the studio is now targeting the “AAA” console market, its founders bring roughly 20 years of industry experience, having previously developed the My Hero Academia mobile title published by Crunchyroll.

The 2028 release target places Genigods: Nezha several years behind other major entries in the current wave of Chinese action games. For comparison, the highly anticipated Phantom Blade Zero is currently expected to arrive in October 2026. By targeting 2028, Genigods Lab appears to be allowing for an extended development cycle to scale their mobile expertise into a full-scale console production.
