Final Fantasy VII Revelation to Feature Optional Level Skip Prompts to End Grinding

Published on:

Square Enix is dismantling one of the oldest traditions in the role-playing genre by introducing a “level skip” feature for Final Fantasy VII Revelation. During an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2026, Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the final entry in the remake trilogy will allow players to bypass the traditional experience grind through a proactive, in-game prompt system.

According to Hamaguchi, the system functions by monitoring a player’s progress relative to upcoming story milestones. When a player approaches a new area or a significant boss encounter while under-leveled, the game will trigger a prompt asking if they wish to automatically boost their party to the recommended level. This design choice aims to ensure that story-focused players are never gated by combat requirements, effectively making the “grind” an entirely optional component of the experience.

Addressing the “Rebirth” Grind

The inclusion of a level skip is reportedly a direct response to feedback from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, where some players felt overwhelmed by the amount of side-content and optional activities required to stay competitive for the main narrative. While Rebirth emphasized a massive open world filled with “Intel” tasks, Revelation appears to be prioritizing narrative flow by removing the mechanical friction of experience points for those who prefer it.

This “anti-grind” philosophy aligns with previous Square Enix experiments, such as the “boost” features found in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, which allowed players to multiply experience gains or turn off random encounters. However, Revelation takes this further by integrating the boost directly into the narrative progression rather than hiding it in a settings menu.

Reports indicate that the maximum character level in Revelation will be 99. This marks a departure from the previous two installments, which utilized lower level caps to manage character scaling across the multi-game arc. The leap to level 99 suggests a significant expansion in character growth and power levels for the trilogy’s conclusion.

Technical Scope

Alongside the level skip announcement, details regarding the game’s technical requirements have emerged. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027. The title is expected to be a massive technical undertaking. It is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

While the level skip allows players to bypass the need for combat experience, it remains unclear how the system will handle Materia growth and Gil acquisition, which typically scale alongside character levels during traditional play.
